Security Advice

  1. Obvious one to start with, but lock up your mini digger! Store indoors in a locked warehouse, garage or any building to make it more secure.
  2. Keep the keys well away. Take the keys away offsite, so many times thieves brake into the office / site cabin and can get easy access to the vehicle. If you cant take them offsite, store them somewhere secure, like a safe or secure inner room. Don’t make it an easy target.
  3. Block It In. If you can not store your mini digger inside, try blocking it in with heavy equipment. This could be concrete blocks or even other more secure equipment. Make it as tough as possible!
  4. Keep in a well lite area. Thieves tend to prefer the dark to work in, they are less lightly to be spotted by a passer by.
  5. Alarm the area. Sensor alarms that you can set when your work is done, or on the building its kept in. Alarms can even ping your phone now if triggered, alerting you right away if your pride and joy is getting unwanted attention. The Ring Alarm and Sensor Kits are great value, easy to setup and can be found here.
  6. Security Cameras. This goes hand in hand with the previous point, and can be used in addition to visually show you any person or persons trying to steal your mini digger. Again, you can watch the wanna be thieves on your mobile phone with cameras such as the ones from Ring (found here). Cameras can be installed in multiple points for a reasonable cost, much cheaper than purchasing a new one. This one from Ring comes also with a floodlight and connects to your mobile phone easily.
  7. Install a tracker. If someone does make off with your digger you can track its movements and alert the police. Rewire Security do a range and we have listed some below or you can see one of the most popular ones here.
  8. DNA Marking / Vehicle Security Marking. Recovery of your vehicle is drastically improved if you DNA Mark it. There are kits available, and are relatively low cost (Kits start at under £50). Visit here for more information.
  9. Secure patrolled compounds. Check locally, there maybe a secure compound that you can leave your mini digger in. It maybe expensive, but if you have a lot of equipment and want to save the hassle it may well be worth it.
  10. Mini Digger Anti Theft Locks. You can get anti theft systems suitable for plant equipment – Derwent Lock & Security have kits starting at just £260 – check them out here
  11. Mechanically Immobilize – By fixing a Meck Lock System on one or more hydraulic circuits of excavators, power shovel, forklifts or telescopic handlers it is possible to mechanically immobilize Forward movement, Reverse movement, Cabin rotation, Steering and Bucket lifting. View them here.

As well as these ways to better secure your mini digger make sure to fully document and photograph your equipment. Serial numbers / registration documents should all be on hand should the need arise. We hope you don’t need them, but if you do you will be glad you spent the extra time.
